19 August 2021, Calgary – While in Regina, Saskatchewan, for the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary’s three-day consular outreach on 17-19 August 2021, Consul General Zaldy Patron also met separately with Regina Mayor Sandra Masters and Saskatchewan Advanced Education Minister Gene Makowsky.
Consul General Patron paid a courtesy call on Mayor Masters at the Regina City Hall on 16 August 2021. Two days later, he hosted a breakfast meeting for Minister Makowsky and three other Advanced Education officials of the province.
Consul General Patron thanked Mayor Masters for the support and assistance her administration has been giving to the estimated 9,000 Filipino and Filipino-Canadian citizens in Regina out of the city’s total population of 236,000 (as of 2016).
In addition, Consul General Patron shared with Mayor Masters and Minister Makowsky the linkages that the PCG had helped establish between the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education, the Department of Science and Technology, the seven Philippine state universities under the Magic 7+ consortium, and the University of the Philippines Los Baños, on one hand, and the University of Saskatchewan, on the other hand.
He also sought the support of Mayor Masters and Minister Makowsky for the PCG’s current advocacy calling for the easier recognition of credentials of Filipino nurses coming to Saskatchewan and Alberta, the two provinces under the PCG’s consular jurisdiction.
