City Supermarket, the biggest Filipino chain of grocerant (grocery and fast
food restaurants) in the U.S., has opened its first branch in Calgary, Alberta,
Canada.
The branch located at 3320 Sunridge
Way Northeast, Calgary had its grand opening on 20 February 2020.
Seafood City in Calgary is the first
in Alberta, the third in Canada (after Toronto and Winnipeg), and the 31stin
North America (28 branches are in the U.S.). Two more branches will be opened
in Edmonton, Alberta and Scarborough, Ontario this year.
True to its banner statement - “Celebrating True Filipino Goodness”, the grocerant offers a variety of Philippine and Asian retail products, such as seafoods (some of which come directly from the Philippines), meat, fruits, vegetables, canned goods and condiments. It also hosts three fast food brands - Grill City, Noodle Street and Crispy Town - that serve Filipino foods. Expected to open in May is a bakery which will sell popular Filipino breads, cookies, kakanin and cakes.

Go during the ribbon cutting ceremony that marked the formal opening of Seafood
City in Calgary. Mr. and Mrs. Go, who migrated to the U.S. in 1989 from the
Philippines, started their supermarket business in San Diego, California, the
same year.
Seafood City expects to provide jobs
to more than 200 people in Calgary. It plans to open one more in Edmonton,
Alberta and another in Scarborough, Ontario this year. Aside from Calgary, Seafood City also has
existing branches in Mississauga, Ontario and Winnipeg, Manitoba.
