14 June 2021, Calgary – During the most revered day of the year for the Filipino people, the Philippine flag flew proudly in some parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, on 12 June 2021 in celebration of the 123rd Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
The cities of Calgary and Lethbridge in Alberta, and Saskatoon and Regina in Saskatchewan observed the recent Philippine Independence Day by hoisting the Philippine flag in their respective City Halls (Calgary, Lethbridge and Regina) and Civic Square (Saskatoon). In Regina and Saskatoon, the Philippine flag was hoisted for eight days, from 7 to 14 June, as the two cities also commemorated the Philippine Heritage Month, which is being celebrated across Canada during the whole month of June.
For its part, the Government of Alberta organized an online Philippine Independence Day Flag Raising event on 12 June hosted by Alberta Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women Leela Sharon Aheer. Among the officials who graced the event were Alberta Lt. Governor Salma Lakhani, Premier Jason Kenney and Consul General Patron.
“I wish to thank the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan for honoring the Philippines as well as the Filipinos and the Filipino-Canadians during this year’s Philippine Independence Day celebrations,” Consul General Patron said. He also thanked the various Filipino community organizations that participated in the celebrations through physical and online activities.
“This recognition means a lot for the estimated 210,000 Filipinos and Filipino-Canadians in the two provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, which are under the PCG’s consular jurisdiction,” he added.
