12 February
2020, Calgary – The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary supported the
Family Reunification Workshop (FRW) organized by the Calgary Immigrant Women’s
Association (CIWA) on 8 February 2020 for the newly reunited Filipino families
in Calgary.
During
his talk, Consul General Zaldy Patron explained the PCG’s consular services to
the 82 Filipinos from 23 families who attended the FRW.
CIWA
organizes the FRW as part of its Filipino Community
Development Program (FDCP), which is funded by the Family
and Community Support Services (FCSS), and in partnership with the Calgary
Catholic School District (CCSD). The
one-day workshop is designed to support the Filipino families who recently
reunited after several years of separation.
Most of the parents of these Filipino families came to Canada under a
temporary work permit and live-in caregiver program.
Through
the FRW, CIWA helps the newly reunited Filipino families integrate into
Canadian society. The other topics discussed at the FRW included: a) Parenting
Laws; b) Rights and Responsibilities in Canada; c) Success in Schools; d) Teen-Talk
Reunification; and e) Child Safety Tips.
The
PCG’s participation in CIWA’s FRW is part of the partnership that the PCG and
CIWA formed last year to jointly reach out to the Filipino community in
Calgary. In 2019, the PCG spoke in five FRWs organized by CIWA.
