24 May 2017 – Consul General Julius D.
Torres of the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary attended the Sponsors
Appreciation Night and Launch of Fiesta Filipino 2017 at the Arts Commons in
Calgary on Friday, 19 May 2017.
Fiesta Filipino is the flagship event of
the Philippine Festival Council of Alberta (PFCA). Now on its third year, the cultural event is
open to the public and features service and food booths and entertainment. Fiesta Filipino 2017 will run from 1 to 3
September 2017 at the Olympic Plaza in Calgary.
Consul General Torres thanked the
organizers for inviting the Consulate to participate at the Fiesta Filipino
event, saying “Fiesta Filipino is an excellent opportunity for the Filipino
community of Calgary to show other Calgarians the warmth of Filipino
hospitality and highlight our culture and love of fun and camaraderie. The Consulate looks forward to participating
at this year’s Fiesta Filipino again and join our kababayans in celebrating the best of the Philippines and its
people.”
The Consulate participated at the Fiesta
Filipino 2016 held last year, manning a booth where Consulate personnel
distributed information and tourism promotion materials to the attendees of the
event and answering queries about available consular services.
Aside from the Consul General, guests at
the launch included Mr. Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism of
Alberta, who commended the organizers for the continued success of the Fiesta
Filipino event, highlighting its role in bringing the culture of the
Philippines to all Calgarians in a festive and fun atmosphere.
Ms. Evangeline Caoile, President of the
PFCA, thanked the guests at the event for their continued support for Fiesta
Filipino and other projects of the PFCA.
She informed the guests that this year’s Fiesta Filipino event will be
extended to three days from the previous two-day event, and will feature, among
other attractions, the tiangge, youth
zones, the food walk and cultural pavilion.
The launch event also featured cultural presentations by different Filipino community groups and a fashion show preview by Iloilo-based couturier Jaki Peñalosa.
