29 April 2019, Calgary
– The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary will have a free film
showing of two Philippine indie films on 22 June and 29 June 2019 for its first
cultural diplomacy project this year. Both films will be shown at the Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall of the Calgary Central Library
located at 800
3 St SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0E7.
The PCG’s film showing project will celebrate
three important milestones this 2019 – the 121st Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, the
Philippine Heritage Month, and the 70th Anniversary of Philippines-Canada
Diplomatic Relations.
The first film, Kanana Kanu, will be shown on 22 June,
Saturday, 11:30 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. The film was directed by Jocelyn Banasan
Kapuno and is about a half-American,
half-Kalinga man discovering his cultural roots and identity. Kanana Kanu was a Finalist at the 2012
Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival held in Davao City, Philippines.
On 29 June, 11:30 a.m. – 2:15 p.m., the PCG will
feature - Anac Ti Pating – a film of Martin
Masadao. The film is a
heartwarming, coming-of-age story about a Baguio boy who wanted to become a
writer. It won the Best Picture at the 2012 Sineng Pambansa National
Film Festival, Davao City, Philippines.
“We are glad for this opportunity to do a free film
showing for our Filipino-Canadian community as a way of celebrating Philippine
arts and culture. Through these two indie films, we hope to make our audience appreciative
of the Philippine film industry and know more about the Philippines through the
interesting stories shared in Kanana Kanu
and Anac Ti Pating,” Consul General
Gilberto Asuque said about the project.
In organizing the 2019 Philippine Film Showing in
Calgary, the PCG is partnering with the Film Development Council of the
Philippines, UP Alumni Association of Alberta, Calgary Public Library and Fiesta
Filipino Council of Alberta.
