General Zaldy Patron was among the dignitaries who attended the State Memorial Service in honor of Saskatchewan’s
Lieutenant Governor W. Thomas Molloy on 13 July 2019 in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan, Canada.
Lt. Gov. Molloy was installed
on 21 March 2018 as the province’s 22nd Lieutenant Governor.
The ceremony was held at the Merlis Belsher Place in the University of
Saskatchewan where Lt. Gov. Molloy also served as Chancellor from 2001 to 2007
and later became Chancellor Emeritus.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe led the list of dignitaries who delivered
eulogies for the late Lt. Gov. The others who spoke included Member of
Parliament and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Ralph
Goodale, Former Saskatchewan Premier Roy Romanow, Assembly of First Nations
National Chief Perry Bellegarde and Ambassador of the Nisga’a Nation Dr. Joseph
Gosnell. Ms. Corry Molloy, daughter of
the Lieutenant Governor, spoke on behalf of the family.
Lt. Gov. Molloy was described as one of Saskatchewan’s distinguished
citizens and the "modern day Father of Confederation"
for his many accomplishments. He was widely recognized for his contributions in the negotiations of 16 modern treaties with indigenous peoples
of Canada. He was the chief Federal Negotiator for Canada during the
negotiations that led to the creation of Nunavut in 1999.
The Province of Saskatchewan, along with the Province of
Alberta, is under the jurisdiction of the Philippine Consulate General in
Calgary headed by Consul General Patron.
In a letter sent to Premier Moe on 5 July 2019, Consul
General Patron conveyed the condolences of the Government and people of the
Philippines to the Government and people of Saskatchewan on the passing of Lt. Gov. Molloy.
