Calgary, 5 November 2023 – Consul General Zaldy Patron recently visited the rural areas of the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan on 26-27 October to meet with the members of the Filipino community and some provincial and municipal government officials.
The Hon. Todd Goudy, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Melfort, Saskatchewan, arranged the visit of Consul General Patron.
The visit took Consul General Patron to the towns of Melfort, St. Brieux, and Humboldt, where hundreds of Filipinos have thrived.
On 26 October, the Filipino Community in Melfort organized a welcome event at the Kerry Vickar Centre that was attended by about 200 people.
The following day in Humboldt, an estimated 300 Filipinos and guests joined the “Kumustahan at Salo-Salo” event organized by The Humboldt Regional Newcomer Centre at the town’s Uniplex Convention Centre.
Among the highlights of the two Filipino community events were the cultural performances of Filipinos in the areas and the talks given by Consul General Patron about the consular services and the various cultural, economic, and education cooperation projects accomplished by the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary.
Consul General Patron and MLA Goudy also traveled to St. Brieux on 27 October to visit Bourgault Industries Ltd., a leading global manufacturer of technologically advanced seeding and tillage equipment, that employs around 300 Filipino workers. Consul General Patron met with the company executives and some Filipino workers during the visit.
Aside from MLA Goudy, Consul General Patron also met with Deputy Premier Donna Harpauer, Mayor Glenn George of Melfort, and Mayor Michael Beheil of Humboldt during the visit. He thanked them for looking after the welfare of the Filipinos in their respective jurisdictions.
“I am glad to see that our fellow Filipinos are doing well even in rural Saskatchewan and to hear from Saskatchewan’s government officials that the Filipinos’ contributions to the province are very much appreciated,” said Consul General Patron.
Saskatchewan is home to 43,755 Filipinos based on the 2021 Census of Statistics Canada.
